UN Demands Accountability Over Police Killings During Peaceful Protesters in Kenya
The United Nations Human Rights Commission has strongly condemned the alleged shooting of peaceful protesters by Kenyan police during the nationwide demonstrations held on Wednesday, June 25.
In a statement issued Thursday, June 26, the UN expressed grave concern over the use of force against demonstrators, calling it a violation of both international human rights standards and the Kenyan Constitution. The organization specifically criticized President William Ruto’s administration for undermining the rights to peaceful assembly and free expression.
“We are deeply concerned by reports of several deaths of protesters and many more injuries to protesters and police officers during demonstrations in Kenya on Wednesday,” the statement read.
According to the UN, law enforcement should only resort to lethal force when absolutely necessary to protect life or prevent serious injury from an imminent threat. The organization emphasized that the right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression are “cornerstones of the rule of law” and must be safeguarded by all authorities.
The global body urged the government to swiftly investigate the reported police shootings and ensure that officers responsible are held accountable. It also called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct a conclusive probe into alleged misconduct by law enforcement.
“We underscore the importance of prompt, thorough, independent and transparent investigations to bring those responsible to justice per due process and to prevent recurrence,” the statement continued.
The UN’s remarks followed reports that at least 16 people had lost their lives during the June 25 demonstrations. Many of the deaths were allegedly caused by police brutality.
The protests, which erupted across multiple counties, were organized to mark the anniversary of the fatal shootings of young demonstrators outside the Parliament Buildings last year. Though initially peaceful, the demonstrations turned violent, with viral footage showing clashes between citizens and heavily armed police. Officers reportedly used tear gas and live bullets in attempts to disperse the crowds.
