Woman Sets House Ablaze While Husband, 2 Children Were Asleep
In a harrowing incident that has sent shockwaves through Kathaia village in Embu County, a woman is alleged to have set her family’s three-bedroom house ablaze while her husband and two children were fast asleep inside. The tragic event unfolded on Sunday night, following what is believed to have been a heated domestic quarrel.
The accused, Beatrice Mueni, reportedly set the house on fire after an argument with her husband, Martin Njeru Gicovi. According to sources close to the family, tensions had been running high between the couple, leading to the devastating outcome.
Njeru, who was jolted awake by the smell of smoke, managed to escape through a window, but not before returning to rescue his 12-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter from the burning home. “I woke up to find the house engulfed in flames. I had to break a window to get out, then I went back in to save my children,” Njeru recounted, still visibly shaken by the ordeal.
The fire, which caused an estimated damage of Ksh. 90,000, was eventually extinguished with the help of neighbors who responded to Njeru’s cries for help. As the flames consumed the house, one resident reported seeing Mueni fleeing towards the Ena Police Post. It was later discovered that she had gone to report an alleged assault by her husband.
In a dramatic turn of events, Mueni confessed to setting the fire, claiming that her intention was only to destroy property. The local community, enraged by the incident, followed Mueni to the police post, where they demanded justice. Police intervened just in time, rescuing her from the angry mob and placing her under arrest.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with residents labeling Mueni a potential killer and calling for her to face the full force of the law. An investigation into the incident is now underway as the community grapples with the tragic consequences of domestic strife.
Local leaders and residents are urging families to seek peaceful resolutions to conflicts to avoid such dangerous and life-threatening situations in the future.
