Why Hellen Obiri’s Move to America Changed Her Life Forever

Hellen Obiri, a two-time Boston Marathon champion and one of Kenya’s brightest athletic stars, has opened up about the bold decision to leave her home country and relocate to the United States in 2022—a move that has transformed her career and mindset.

The transition came shortly before Obiri’s marathon debut in New York, where she finished sixth. Although the result wasn’t groundbreaking, it laid the foundation for a remarkable reinvention that would follow in her athletic journey.

Speaking candidly in a recent interview, Obiri credited her move to the US for broadening her horizons and allowing her to embrace a more equitable environment, especially as a female athlete.

“They say that in life, opportunities knock at your door only once. Had I stayed in Kenya, I could have been in a rural community, even running, but the spotlight is always on men,” she reflected.

Obiri explained that life in the US provided an environment where women are equally valued and afforded the same chances as men to excel in sports. “In the United States, women are valued. My mindset expanded greatly while living there. You feel appreciated and strive to work harder and grow. Women need to support more women. Today, I feel truly honoured,” she added.

Her bold relocation has borne fruit, especially after an initial setback in the New York City Marathon. Obiri’s resurgence began with a spectacular win at the 2023 Boston Marathon, followed by a triumphant season finale at the New York City Marathon—a race that has become her stronghold.

Despite being at the twilight of her career at 34, Obiri has continued to defy odds. The 2024 season saw her clinch another Boston Marathon victory, secure bronze at the Paris Olympics, and achieve a second-place finish at the New York City Marathon, further cementing her legacy.

Her decision to relocate also highlights a broader issue affecting Kenya’s female athletes. Obiri’s story emerges as the country grapples with the safety and treatment of female athletes, amid reports of predatory behavior in Iten targeting potential stars.

As Obiri continues to shine, her story is a powerful testament to the rewards of embracing change and the importance of creating equitable opportunities for women in sports.
