Wafula Chebukati Responds to President Ruto’s Announcement of IEBC Job Vacancies
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati has officially responded following President William Ruto’s announcement of his job vacancy.
In a statement issued on Sunday, October 23, Chebukati expressed his support for the President’s decision, highlighting its significance in ensuring a seamless transition within the commission.
“I wish to welcome the decision to gazette impending vacancies for the positions of IEBC Chairperson and 2 Commissioners, which will officially be vacant from 18/1/2023. This will ensure smooth transition and retention of institutional memory, which has previously not been the case,” Chebukati said.
President Ruto had earlier gazetted the vacancies for the IEBC Chairperson position and two commissioner posts, which will become available as of January 17, 2023. In his notice, Ruto exercised his powers as conferred by section 7A (2) of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act.
The gazette notice dated October 21, 2022, formalized the upcoming end of Chebukati’s six-year non-renewable term, alongside that of commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu, who were all appointed on January 18, 2017.
Chebukati’s statement suggests that the IEBC Chair is keen on facilitating a smooth handover, prioritizing the continuity of the commission’s work as his term nears its end.
