USIU Lecturer Faces Charges Over Ksh.10M UK Trip Scam
Police in Nairobi are investigating a shocking case where a lecturer allegedly swindled USIU-Africa students out of over Ksh.10 million for a non-existent UK educational trip. The students, who have recorded statements at Kasarani Police Station, claim the lecturer deceived them under the guise of an educational trip scheduled for April 2024.
The lecturer, Moses Joshua Onyango, former Chairman of the International Relations department, allegedly convinced the students to pay USD 3,000 (Ksh.386,485) each for the trip. In total, 24 students handed over approximately Ksh.10,872,000. However, Onyango claims he only received around Ksh.7 million.
The trip, initially planned for April 2024, was abruptly postponed under mysterious circumstances. When students demanded answers, they discovered the trip was never sanctioned by the university. Despite their efforts to seek refunds and clarification, they faced significant obstacles and received no substantial feedback from the institution. Consequently, they turned to the police for assistance.
The Vice Chancellor of USIU-Africa stated that the university is conducting a comprehensive review of the situation and will provide further information upon the investigation’s conclusion.
In a shocking revelation, the students learned Onyango had directed them to deposit the money into his personal bank account, even going as far as faking a travel itinerary. Onyango, now facing legal scrutiny, was presented in court on Thursday. The Makadara Law Courts have released him on cash bail while investigations continue.
