University Strike Start As Lecturers Vow Not to Teach
In a significant disruption to education, learning in all public universities nationwide has come to a halt following a nationwide strike by university lecturers.
The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) announced the industrial action on Tuesday, with lecturers protesting against the government’s failure to fulfill promises outlined in the 2012-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Leading the charge, UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga asserted that the strike would persist until the government upholds the negotiated return-to-work formula, which includes critical benefits aimed at improving the lecturers’ welfare.
He emphasized that no teaching would resume until all dues are settled and the agreement honored.
Accusing university vice-chancellors of prolonging the standoff, Wasonga expressed frustration over what he described as years of systematic disregard for fair remuneration.
The lecturers remain resolute, declaring that no lecturer will set foot in lecture halls until their demands are fully met.
