Ukraine Denies Accusations Following Trump Assassination Attempt Arrest
Kyiv has strongly denied any connection to Ryan Routh, the man accused of attempting to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Routh, a staunch supporter of Ukraine, was arrested Sunday after allegedly bringing a rifle to Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course, marking the second attempt on Trump’s life in two months.
U.S. media reported that Routh, 58, had previously traveled to Ukraine following Russia’s 2022 invasion, where he expressed support for the Ukrainian cause and sought to recruit foreign volunteers to fight. However, Ukrainian officials quickly distanced themselves from Routh, stating they had no affiliation with him.
“He was never part of or linked to the International Legion in any capacity,” a representative from Ukraine’s Foreign Volunteers Command said.
The Kremlin seized on the incident, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov hinting at potential repercussions for U.S. support of Ukraine. “Playing with fire has its consequences,” Peskov remarked.
This latest incident has raised concerns over the safety of presidential candidates ahead of the November 5 election, with both Trump and his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, condemning political violence. President Joe Biden has directed federal agencies to ensure all necessary resources are in place to protect Trump and other candidates.
Despite Routh’s apparent support for Ukraine, officials in Kyiv dismissed any links and accused Moscow of using the assassination attempt to push propaganda and stir conspiracy theories.
