“Uhuru Has Only One Vote”: He No Longer Represents Mt Kenya
“This came after President William Ruto made a surprise visit to Kenyatta’s Gatundu ”: He No Longer Represents Mt Kenya
Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Nelson Havi has dismissed the political significance of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, claiming he no longer holds sway over the Mt Kenya region.
This came after President William Ruto made a surprise visit to Kenyatta’s Gatundu home on Monday. Ruto described the meeting as part of efforts to promote national unity and address tribal divisions.
The encounter surprised many, given their strained relationship since Kenyatta refused to endorse Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid, instead supporting Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s Day Break program on Wednesday, Havi said neither Ruto nor Kenyatta could revive their political influence in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.
“Uhuru Kenyatta has only one vote and no longer represents Mt Kenya. There is talk of a further coalition government beyond the one between President Ruto and Raila Odinga; to what end?” Havi questioned.
He dismissed any talks of resurrecting the 2019 Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), labeling such efforts as “backward.”
“Whoever conceives of a rebirth of the BBI enterprise should be perceived through that prism – no longer interested in what is key,” Havi argued, calling on Kenyans to remain vigilant.
Havi further dismissed the reconciliation among Ruto, Kenyatta, and Odinga, referring to it as a “nefarious scheme.”
After the 2022 presidential election, which Odinga lost to Ruto and later unsuccessfully contested in court, Odinga organized anti-government protests in 2023. However, the former prime minister has since mended ties with Ruto, who is now backing Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
