‘Tutapeleka serikali ya Zakayo nyumbani’Kalonzo Vows to Topple Ruto’s ‘Zakayo Government’
Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has escalated his campaign against President William Ruto’s administration, pledging to unseat what he refers to as the “Zakayo government.”
Speaking on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, August 31, 2024, after a charged political rally in Mombasa, the former Vice President made it clear that his opposition to the Kenya Kwanza regime is unwavering.
“My eyes are wide open na tutapeleka serikali ya Zakayo nyumbani. Mambo ya ajabu yatatokea,” Kalonzo declared, using the nickname “Zakayo” to refer to President Ruto, a term that has gained traction among his critics.
In a video shared on his social media platform, Kalonzo praised the youth, particularly the Gen Z, for holding the government accountable through protests, despite the unfortunate loss of lives during demonstrations. “Nataka mjue kutatokea mambo ya ajabu Kenya hii. Wakenya wamechoka, Gen Z vijana wakauwa na sisi tunawapongezeni Mombasa kwa kuwatoa vijana wenu wa Gen Z,” he stated, signaling that more unexpected actions might unfold.
Kalonzo, who has increasingly taken up the mantle as the leading opposition voice following ODM’s softened stance towards the government, continues to challenge every move made by Ruto’s administration. Recently, he criticized the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) over plans to introduce tolls on major highways, accusing the government of seeking to burden Kenyans further.
“We know that these people are desperate; they cannot wait to raid people’s pockets again. I know they want to introduce road tolls. Well, I want to tell Ruto and his people, if you want to bring road tolls again, please go and build your own roads, not the ones that Kibaki and Uhuru built. So if you introduce a toll on Thika Super Highway, you are raiding the people’s pockets. So we will reject that,” Kalonzo asserted, reaffirming his opposition to the tolling proposal.
Alongside other opposition figures like Eugene Wamalwa and NARC-Kenya leader Martha Karua, Kalonzo has been steadfast in resisting government policies. Their defiance has grown, especially after several top ODM leaders accepted Cabinet positions within Ruto’s government—a move Wamalwa described as a betrayal.
“For us as Azimio to actually go into bed with Ruto is betrayal of the highest order. And that is why, as we sit here today, we in Azimio have reached a point of divorce. In a marriage, when grounds of a divorce arrive, one of those is when you have irreconcilable differences. That is where we have reached, and we have disagreed as a matter of principle because people are saying Okoa Kenya from Zakayo, but part of Azimio is saying tuokoe Zakayo,” Wamalwa remarked in a recent statement.
Kalonzo’s renewed vigor in opposing Ruto’s government comes on the heels of the President’s recent tour of the Nyanza region, a stronghold of Raila Odinga, signaling a possible escalation in political tensions.
