Trump to Be Sentenced in Hush Money Case Days Before Inauguration
Donald Trump will be sentenced on January 10 in his hush money case, just days before his scheduled inauguration as president. New York Justice Juan Merchan has signaled that Trump will face an “unconditional discharge” without jail time, probation, or fines. The president-elect may attend the hearing in person or virtually, according to the judge’s order.
The case stems from Trump’s conviction in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The charges relate to a $130,000 payment to adult-film star Stormy Daniels to silence claims of an alleged affair ahead of the 2016 election. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty, dismissing the case as a politically motivated attack.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump described the sentencing order as unconstitutional and a threat to the presidency, while his spokesperson, Steven Cheung, condemned the case as part of a broader “witch hunt.” Trump also unsuccessfully argued that the trial violated presidential immunity and that it would hinder his ability to govern.
Justice Merchan rejected Trump’s arguments to dismiss the case but indicated measures to address concerns over distractions during his presidency. Options included delaying sentencing until the end of Trump’s term or ensuring a non-prison sentence.
The president-elect is also facing charges in three other criminal cases, including the mishandling of classified documents and alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Despite these legal battles, Trump remains on course to become the first convicted felon to assume the presidency. Appeals against his conviction are expected after sentencing.
