Tragedy on Sagana-Karatina Highway: Mother and Son Killed by Speeding Vehicle
Tragedy struck on the Sagana-Karatina Highway in the Gacharu area early Friday morning when a 32-year-old mother and her nine-year-old son were fatally struck by a speeding vehicle. The pair were reportedly waiting for the boy’s school bus when a pickup truck transporting milk, en route from Sagana to Karatina, lost control and ran over them.
Kirinyaga West Sub-County Police Commander Moses Koskei confirmed the incident, stating that the driver involved surrendered himself at Kiangwaci Police Station shortly afterward.
“We have taken the bodies of the 32-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son to Kibugi Funeral Home awaiting a postmortem,” said Commander Koskei. He further noted that the vehicle has been towed to Sagana Police Station as investigations continue.
In the aftermath of the tragic accident, outraged residents took to the highway, blocking it to express their frustrations. They voiced their concerns over the lack of speed bumps along the stretch, particularly given that many schools are situated in the area.
David Mwangi, a resident, emphasized, “Accidents along this road are caused by speeding vehicles, and the Chinese contractor has failed to erect bumps on the road, despite children needing to cross the road to get to school
” Echoing the sentiment, Joseph Kinyua added, “We want the contractor to come here, cut the road grills, and erect speed bumps. We have been writing several letters to him in vain.”
Residents have now called upon local authorities and the contractor responsible for the road’s construction to urgently address their concerns, fearing that more lives may be lost if the issue is not resolved swiftly.
