Traffickers Fined Ksh.30M or 12-Month Jail Term Following Sting Operation
Two foreign nationals have been sentenced to either pay a hefty fine of Ksh. 30 million each or serve a 12-month jail term for trafficking narcotics in Nairobi.
The ruling was made at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) court after the suspects pleaded guilty to charges of possessing illegal drugs.
The two individuals, arrested during a sting operation on March 13, 2024, in the Nyamakima area, were caught with 39.04 grammes of heroin and 25.71 grammes of cannabis. The operation was carried out by the Transnational Organised Crimes Unit under the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Following their apprehension, detectives searched the suspects’ residences in Umoja and Sunton, where the illegal substances were found.
Charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, they faced stiff penalties, with the law stipulating that possession of narcotics weighing 50 mg or less warrants a minimum fine of Ksh. 10 million.
Both suspects opted to plead guilty, leading to their sentencing. Besides the fine or jail term, the court ordered that they be deported back to their home country after serving their sentences or paying the fines. Additionally, the court directed that the seized narcotics be destroyed.
