“Tornado Hits Aldershot as UK Prepares for Stormy Weekend”
The UK is bracing for a turbulent weekend as thunderstorms lash southern parts of the country, with one confirmed tornado striking Aldershot. The Met Office has issued yellow warnings, anticipating more severe weather in the coming days.
On Saturday, Wales, central, and southern England are expected to face a barrage of lightning, heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds, while Sunday brings the threat of further downpours, localized flooding, and travel disruptions.
The chaos began on Friday night, with an astounding 8,000 lightning strikes lighting up the skies over southern England. Intense rainfall led to localized flash flooding, and the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation verified that a tornado had torn through Aldershot, Hampshire, causing significant damage.
More thunderstorms are expected throughout Saturday, and the Met Office has maintained its yellow warning for areas across Wales, central, and southern England. These storms may bring intense downpours, accompanied by gusty winds and hail, with localized flash flooding remaining a risk. While some regions may dodge the storms entirely, others could see up to 50mm (2 inches) of rain.
The turbulent weather will continue through Saturday night into Sunday, with another yellow warning for rain extending across the day. However, not every region will experience these harsh conditions. Scotland, Northern Ireland, and areas surrounding the Irish Sea are forecasted to have drier and calmer weather, enjoying plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures.
As the autumn equinox arrives on Sunday, the weekend weather marks a sudden shift from summer to autumn. Cooler air from the north will soon move in, ushering in a chillier week ahead, with temperatures dropping to as low as 12°C in Scotland and around 16°C along the English Channel coast.
The UK could see a return of occasional warmer spells in October, but the coming days will be a reminder that autumn is settling in.
