Thousands Seek Qatar Employment as Mutua Announces Key Updates on Overseas Opportunities
Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has addressed the significant response from Kenyans seeking employment in Qatar, after thousands gathered at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi on Friday, October 25.
This overwhelming turnout marks a clear reflection of the high unemployment rates in Kenya, as citizens pursue the 8,000 new job openings negotiated by the government with the Gulf nation.
The roles available span across sectors like hospitality, construction, technical trades, and service, offering a diverse array of opportunities for Kenyans looking to work abroad. Mutua’s Saturday update confirmed that the hospitality positions have already been filled, thanking candidates for their persistence and urging them to seize any remaining openings.
As part of the process, he clarified that interviews would continue on Sunday, October 27 at the Kabete National Polytechnic for most sectors, with nursing candidates set to have their interviews at KICC. However, due to the high demand, all positions for female cleaners have been taken, although openings remain for men.
Kenyans with technical skills in construction roles such as rigging, electrical work, plumbing, welding, and more still have chances to secure positions. The recruitment drive aligns with bilateral discussions that included a new Memorandum of Understanding between Kenya and Qatar, which aims to facilitate better pathways for Kenyan workers abroad.
This new agreement is expected to significantly increase the Kenyan workforce in Qatar from the current 67,000 to approximately 200,000, aided by the recent establishment of a Qatar Visa Centre and support station in Nairobi. President William Ruto’s recent engagement with Qatar’s Minister of Labour, Dr. Ali Bin Samikh Al-Marri, underscores Kenya’s commitment to opening doors for its citizens in international markets, ensuring robust labour protections through this expanded diplomatic and employment channel.
