The Great Betrayal: Wamalwa Warns of Azimio’s Collapse Under Ruto’s Influence

In a shocking revelation, Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has hinted at a possible exit from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition, signaling a potential political realignment. During an interview on August 12, 2024, Wamalwa accused President William Ruto of effectively swallowing the opposition by co-opting key figures from Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) into his administration.

Wamalwa, visibly frustrated, described the ODM’s decision to collaborate with Ruto as a “betrayal of the highest order,” asserting that the once united Azimio coalition is now on the brink of collapse. “We in Azimio have reached a point of divorce,” he stated, likening the situation to a marriage that has hit irreconcilable differences.

The former Defense Cabinet Secretary did not mince words, criticizing ODM for allegedly prioritizing their alliance with Ruto over the people’s call to resist his leadership, whom he referred to as “Zakayo.” He underscored that while the public is rallying to save Kenya, ODM seems intent on saving Ruto.

In a move echoing Martha Karua’s earlier actions, Wamalwa hinted that his party, DAP-K, is poised to follow suit by issuing an official exit notice from Azimio. He also pointed out that Peter Munya’s PNU party had already done the same, further indicating the disintegration of the coalition.

The Azimio coalition has been facing internal turmoil since the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) released a controversial report that, according to Wamalwa, neglected critical issues such as the high cost of living. The situation further deteriorated when Raila Odinga engaged in talks with President Ruto, a move that Wamalwa believes has led to the formation of a broad-based government that has absorbed ODM’s leadership, leaving Azimio in disarray.

As the cracks within Azimio widen, Eugene Wamalwa’s statements have thrown the coalition’s future into question, with many now waiting to see what steps the remaining affiliate parties will take in the days to come.
