Terrifying Crime Spree Ends as DCI Takes Down Notorious Ten-Man Gang in Nairobi
A notorious 10-man gang believed to have terrorized godown owners across Nairobi and its surrounding areas has been apprehended in a major operation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The suspects, aged between 36 and 50, have been linked to a series of high-profile break-ins, targeting hardware goods, steel products, lubricants, and motor vehicle spare parts.
The operation was a joint effort by the DCI’s Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) in Nairobi and DCI Kasarani, culminating in the gang’s arrest after an exhaustive search of their hideouts in Nairobi and its outskirts.
The breakthrough led detectives to a significant recovery site in Juja’s Faith Estate – Riverside Court, where 463 cartons of stolen lubricants were uncovered. The stolen goods, valued at millions, had been taken from a godown at Thika Industrial Park. Four motor vehicles associated with the break-ins were also seized.
Investigations have revealed the gang’s involvement in a chilling April 2024 break-in at a Mwiki market, where they looted hardware items and laptops from two godowns. In a more violent incident on July 26, 2024, the gang struck a steel factory in Kamulu, scaling walls and binding security guards before launching a brutal attack on night shift workers, resulting in the tragic death of one employee. The assailants made off with tonnes of nails and barbed wire.
Nairobi’s escalating crime rate remains a growing concern. A recent study by Numbeo ranked the city as the 9th most dangerous in Africa, with a crime index of 59.2 and a safety index of 40.8. The Economic Survey 2024 highlighted a sharp increase in reported crime, with Nairobi recording 11,108 cases in 2023, up by 2,596 cases from the previous year. The neighboring Kiambu County also saw a rise, with 9,532 cases reported in 2023.
