Students Protest UoN Graduation List Exclusions; University Denies Wrongdoing
The University of Nairobi (UoN) has dismissed allegations that over 200 students were excluded from the graduation list just days before the scheduled ceremony.
This follows an uproar captured in videos on Thursday, December 12, where affected students stormed the Dean’s Office seeking answers regarding their absence from the list.
In a statement issued the same day, UoN clarified, “The University categorically affirms that no student who has qualified, been cleared, and subsequently approved by the Senate has been denied the opportunity to graduate.”
The institution emphasized that degrees are only awarded upon the successful completion of all program requirements, subject to the Senate’s final approval.
University’s Assurance on Transparency
Responding to the complaints, UoN refuted claims of unfair exclusion. The statement added, “We are not aware of any cases in which qualified students cleared and approved by the Senate have been unjustly excluded from the graduation list.”
The university reminded students that the graduation process began in October 2024 through official notifications detailing the requirements. Qualified students were urged to clear outstanding dues and pay graduation fees to secure participation in the December 13 event.
Students’ Allegations Persist
Despite UoN’s position, some students expressed dissatisfaction, claiming the exclusions were unjust and poorly communicated. Alleged issues included discrepancies in course credits, missing marks, and unresolved administrative matters.
The controversy comes as Kenyan universities face increased scrutiny. Recent investigations revealed malpractices at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, where over 200 unqualified students reportedly bribed officials to graduate.
