“Stop Opposing Everything!” Angry Ruto Warns Detractors
President William Ruto has harshly criticized a segment of Kenyans who he accuses of opposing his administration’s transformative projects, branding such opposition as driven by ill intentions.
Speaking on Tuesday during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Devki Iron Processing Project in Taita Taveta County, Ruto lashed out at detractors of initiatives like Affordable Housing, the Taifa Care health plan, the university funding model, and the national livestock vaccination campaign. He argued that those opposing these projects provide no viable alternatives, describing their actions as “an evil spirit possessing them.”
“Wakenya tafadhali, kuna pepo chafu ya kupinga kila kitu. Kiwanda kama hii, affordable housing, chanjo ya ng’ombe kuondoa magonjwa, kubadilisha mfumo ndo tuweze kuokoa university zetu, mambo ya afya wanaipinga. Nauliza hii pepo chafu. Imefika wanapinga ata matoleo kanisani, what is this, surely,” the President said.
He went on to urge prayers for the nation and firmly condemned online critics: “This spirit of opposing everything, tuombee nchi yetu. Wale ambao wanapinga kwa mitandao, tunawambia shetani ashindwe.”
Stalled JKIA Upgrade Sparks Presidential Frustration
President Ruto also expressed his displeasure over the halted upgrade of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), following the cancellation of a deal with the Adani Group. He questioned why some Kenyans celebrated the cancellation while simultaneously lamenting the airport’s outdated infrastructure.
“I saw them saying those who stopped the upgrading of our airport are heroes. Mashujaa kitu gani? Airport pale iko kwa runway, inafuja maji, sijui ni ya aina gani. What gain do you get when you stop the building of an airport in your country?” he vented, adding that many critics had never even set foot at the airport.
Despite the setback, Ruto affirmed his government’s commitment to improving the facility. “We are going to build a new airport in Kenya. We may have stopped Adani from building it, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to build it. We will establish a new framework and work with partners who believe in this country to achieve this,” he stated.
