State House Bodyguard in the Spotlight Over Alleged Nightclub Shooting
Nairobi police are investigating a disturbing incident where a State House spokesperson’s bodyguard allegedly killed a civilian in Kawangware.
The officer is accused of fatally shooting 35-year-old Amos Lagat.
Witnesses claim the altercation stemmed from a bet at a local pub. Lagat, who won, reportedly angered the officer, who had lost. The dispute escalated tragically, resulting in multiple shots fired at close range into Lagat’s stomach and chest.
Lagat died shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital. The officer then gave a conflicting statement to the police, claiming he was attacked by robbers. He alleged that three men accosted him, forcing him to fire warning shots.
The officer further stated that one of the men briefly stole his Ceska pistol, which he managed to recover, and then fired more shots into the air. He also reported sustaining an arm injury during the supposed altercation.
Muthangari Police Station officers have taken over the investigation. They have disarmed the officer and hospitalized him. They plan to revisit the scene, gather witness testimonies, and review CCTV footage. Lagat’s body was moved to Chiromo mortuary for postmortem.
This incident follows a similar one in February, where a GSU officer shot a fellow officer in Gigiri, highlighting growing concerns about police conduct.
