Six Matatu Imposters Arrested for Passenger Robbery and Kidnapping
Police have apprehended six individuals believed to have been posing as matatu operators to rob unsuspecting passengers in Nairobi’s Parklands area. The arrest, carried out by the Operations Support Unit (OSU), followed reports that the gang had been targeting passengers, robbing them of their valuables, and even kidnapping some before releasing them in isolated locations.
The breakthrough came after a tip-off from a concerned citizen who witnessed a hit-and-run accident involving the suspects’ matatu along Kipande Road. Before the collision, the group had reportedly kidnapped and robbed a passenger.
The accident forced the suspects to flee the scene, but their movements had already drawn the attention of onlookers, one of whom reported the suspicious activity to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to the police, the gang had earlier picked up a female passenger at Kempinski Hotel before letting some of their members disembark, leaving the woman at the mercy of the remaining robbers. As they attempted to carry out their plan, the passenger began screaming, prompting the panicked robbers to cause the accident that ultimately led to their downfall.
A swift response from the OSU saw the six suspects arrested, with one found in possession of five stolen mobile phones and a tablet. Efforts are now underway to track down a female member of the gang who remains at large.
Authorities have called on anyone who may have fallen victim to this group to report to the DCI Headquarters Operations Directorate. Police also urged the public to continue providing anonymous tips through the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free line, 0800 722 203, to help curb crime.
