“Shugulika na Nairobi” Passaris Faces Backlash for Standing with Kamala Harris Against Trump
A fiery online debate erupted after Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris publicly defended U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris against recent criticism from former President Donald Trump. Trump, who has been vocal against Harris, recently tweeted that she had “lost the Catholic vote” over her stance on reproductive rights, claiming her views alienated religious voters.
Trump’s statement came after Harris reiterated her support for a woman’s right to choose and stated she would oppose religious exemptions in abortion laws if elected president. She expressed that there should be no compromise on fundamental freedoms, including a woman’s autonomy over her body, saying, “I don’t think we should be making concessions when we’re talking about a fundamental freedom to make decisions about your own body.”
Trump did not mince words in his response, accusing Harris of “persecuting the Catholic Church” and allegedly advocating for late-term pregnancy terminations, charges her supporters strongly dispute. “Her poll numbers have dropped like a rock,” Trump asserted, accusing Harris and the Democrats of losing public support with religious communities.
Passaris quickly came to Harris’ defense, countering Trump’s statements and asserting that women’s rights are inseparable from human rights. She rebuked Trump, accusing him of being “narcissistic” and lacking empathy for women’s rights. “Your campaign is so full of hate and venom; what a contradiction to the perception of godliness you put out there just for votes,” Passaris responded.
However, Passaris’ involvement in the U.S. political discourse triggered backlash back home, with many Kenyans urging her to prioritize local issues instead. Social media users voiced frustration, urging Passaris to focus on Nairobi’s pressing issues like femicide and economic challenges.
One Twitter user, Rosie, remarked, “Femicide rates are sky high in Kenya. But she is busy defending the most POWERFUL WOMAN in the world! What a shame!” Another user, Muthomi Martins, echoed this sentiment: “Focus on Nairobi and Kenyan politics.”
The ongoing digital debate raises questions about the role of local leaders in foreign political matters and highlights Kenyan citizens’ concerns over their representatives’ priorities.
