Shocking As ;Wife Among Suspects Of Murder Case Of Marathon Champion
Four suspects, including the wife of former marathon champion Samson Kandie, were arraigned in court on Wednesday in connection with his brutal murder. Kandie, once the victor of the prestigious Vienna City Marathon, was found hacked to death on October 4 at his residence in the Elgon View estate, a crime that has shaken the peaceful Eldoret community.
His family, devastated by the attack, rushed him to the Real Hospital in Eldoret, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. A police report noted that nothing appeared to have been stolen except for his mobile phone, deepening the mystery surrounding his tragic death.
Felix Chirchir, the lead investigator on the case, informed the Eldoret Magistrates Court that the suspects had been hiding within the city but were captured after intensive efforts by authorities. Chirchir requested the court to allow for a 14-day detention of the suspects to conclude investigations, stating that two more suspects were still at large.
“I pray that you grant us 14 days to hold the suspects at Langas Police Station cells pending completion of investigations into the killing of the former international runner at his house in Elgon View estate three weeks ago,” Chirchir said in court.
The court, led by Magistrate Peter Ireri, granted the request and ordered that the four suspects undergo a mental assessment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. The suspects are to remain in police custody until the next court mention on November 7.
The tragic death of Kandie, if linked to his wife, would add to a growing list of athletes whose lives were ended by those closest to them, such as the case of Kenyan Olympian Agnes Tirop, who was murdered by her husband in 2021, and Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, killed by an ex-partner last month.
