Shocking ; As Engineer Vanishes During EACC Raid in Ksh.1.2B Case
In a major twist in the Ksh.1.2 billion Bomet County corruption scandal, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers were met with disappointment when the main suspect, Roads Engineer Victor Cheruiyot, slipped away just as they arrived at his residence.
The search at his home uncovered damning evidence, including 121 stamps linked to various companies and a stockpile of fraudulent procurement documents.
Engineer Cheruiyot, already under suspicion for manipulating his position to win substantial tenders from January 2019 to May 2022, is said to have used several companies such as Hamron Logistics Ltd, Wincheru Construction Ltd, and Vird Building & Construction Ltd to siphon off millions from county funds.
These companies allegedly served as fronts for non-existent projects through which payments were facilitated with collusion from top county officials.
During the raid, EACC officers found an elaborate setup suspected to be an operation hub for creating counterfeit construction documents to facilitate payments for projects that were never executed. EACC sources say the seized materials include ‘approved’ contracts, procurement requisitions, payment vouchers, and local purchase orders, all of which point to an extensive scheme to defraud the county.
The engineer’s escape follows the earlier arrest of several County Executive Committee (CEC) members suspected of amassing unexplained wealth and partaking in fraudulent procurement deals. Authorities report that the CECs are under investigation for procuring 12 road construction vehicles in the 2022/2023 financial year under questionable circumstances, with alleged embezzlement of up to Ksh.373 million.
The EACC continues its pursuit of Cheruiyot and promises to dismantle the intricate network of corruption and fraud affecting Bomet County. The commission reiterates its commitment to hold all those involved accountable and recover any misappropriated funds.
