Shocking As Brutal Murder of Marathon Champion Kandie Leaves Eldoret in Shock
Shock and disbelief have engulfed the quiet Elgon View neighborhood in Eldoret following the brutal killing of former marathon champion Samson Kandie.
The 53-year-old athlete, best known for his wins in the 2002 Sapporo and 2004 Vienna marathons, was found beaten and tied up near his home in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Thursday night.
The tragic discovery came after Kandie’s family was alerted to his whereabouts through a disturbing phone call from an unknown individual.
His daughter, Vienna Kandie, painfully recalled the moment she found her father behind the home’s toilet, his body brutally assaulted. Kandie was immediately rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Questions loom over the motive behind Kandie’s murder, as the retired athlete lived a relatively quiet life. Authorities have launched an investigation, but no arrests have been made, leaving many to wonder why a national hero like Kandie was targeted in such a horrific manner.
The death of Kandie has stirred grief and anger within the Kenyan athletic community. Renowned athlete Ezekiel Kemboi voiced his frustration, criticizing the government for failing to provide adequate protection to athletes, who have increasingly become targets for criminals. “If MPs get security, why can’t athletes have the same?” Kemboi asked, highlighting the vulnerability of national heroes post-retirement.
Kandie’s legacy, including his personal best of 2:08:31 at the 1999 Berlin Marathon, will forever be remembered, but his untimely death casts a somber shadow over Kenya’s proud athletic heritage. Many are calling on the government to act swiftly to protect athletes from similar tragedies.
Investigations continue, with authorities yet to determine whether Kandie’s death was a targeted attack or a robbery gone wrong. As Eldoret, a town celebrated for its athletic success, mourns the loss of one of its own, the country waits anxiously for justice.
