Shock ; Funeral Disrupted as Swarm of Bees Attacks Mourners
A funeral in Ngurubani, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, turned chaotic when a swarm of bees attacked mourners, leaving several injured and hospitalized. The burial of retired teacher Faith Njeri Murigu, 76, was brought to a halt as mourners fled the scene at Huduruma Estate.
Ngari Muthang’ato, the master of ceremonies, confirmed the incident, saying, “Several people, including family members and clergy, were taken to the hospital. Some of us are still nursing injuries, and the ceremony was stopped.”
The burial procession, which began at ACK St. Luke Wang’uru Church, had just concluded a service when the mourners were attacked while preparing to lay the deceased to rest.
Rev. Irene Gitari of ACK St. Luke Church recounted the ordeal, saying, “I prayed intensely, but the bees kept coming. Eventually, I had to run for my safety. This incident has shocked everyone in Ngurubani and Kirinyaga.”
Emergency services, including firefighters from the Kirinyaga County Government, arrived later, but locals had already resorted to lighting tires to disperse the swarm.
The deceased was eventually buried later that night in a private ceremony with a handful of mourners present. “We had come from Ndia constituency to bury our aunt in Mwea, and we were shocked by this incident. It’s the first time we’ve witnessed anything like it,” said Samuel Waweru, a family member.
Fortunately, those hospitalized were treated and discharged, the family reported.
