Shock as Two Men Arrested for Allegedly Making Mutura from Dog Meat
Authorities in Narok have detained two men accused of slaughtering dogs to prepare mutura and samosas, shocking local residents who discovered the operation after following unusual canine cries.
According to one resident, the events unfolded when persistent dog wails attracted attention from a local kiosk. “We were in my shop when we heard a dog wailing continuously,” he recounted. “After some time, another dog went to investigate, but then it, too, started wailing and disappeared. Concerned, I sent someone to check, only to find these two men with dog carcasses,” he explained, visibly disturbed by the discovery.
Initially, residents assumed the dogs were being assaulted, but their worst fears were confirmed upon finding the suspects with the animals’ remains. “I’m never eating mutura again,” declared another shocked local. “If they’re using dog meat, I’m done with it.”
Mutura, a beloved Kenyan street delicacy, is typically made from cow, goat, or lamb intestines filled with minced meat, tripe, spices, and occasionally blood. Known for its tantalizing aroma, mutura is often enjoyed with kachumbari (tomato and onion salad) and is a common feature in cities like Nairobi, where makeshift street grills serve it fresh to passersby.
This case adds to a series of incidents where vendors have been caught using unconventional meats in popular Kenyan snacks. In 2017, a man in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area was arrested for allegedly using cat and dog meat in his samosas and mutura. The following year, another man in Nakuru admitted to selling cat meat for more than six years, reportedly filling a “market gap.” Police intervened just in time to save him from an enraged mob.
The recent arrests highlight ongoing concerns in Kenya about the authenticity of meat used in street foods once crowned as “king of the streets.” Despite the growing outcry, local authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
