Shock As ;Ten Newborns Die in neonatal intensive care unit
A devastating fire claimed the lives of ten newborns at the neonatal intensive care unit of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi district, Uttar Pradesh, late on Friday night.
The tragic incident, which left the nation in shock, occurred approximately 285 kilometers southwest of the state capital, Lucknow.
Emergency teams managed to rescue 38 infants from the ward, which housed a total of 49 newborns at the time of the blaze. State Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak confirmed the grim toll and shared updates on the survivors. “Seventeen of the injured are receiving treatment in various hospital wings and private facilities,” Pathak said during a press briefing. He added that seven of the deceased infants had been identified, while efforts were ongoing to identify the remaining three.
One infant is still unaccounted for, according to an unnamed government official who was not authorized to speak to the media. The cause of the fire remains undetermined, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called for a comprehensive inquiry into the tragic event.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences, describing the incident as “heart-wrenching.” On the social media platform X, he wrote: “My deepest condolences to those who lost their innocent children in this. I pray to God to give them the strength to bear this immense loss.”
As investigations continue, questions loom about fire safety standards in healthcare facilities across the region. The loss of ten fragile lives has cast a somber shadow, with families mourning and demanding answers.
