“‘‘Serikali Haiwezi Omba Ruhusa‘z’: Junet Mohamed Calls for Faster Project Approvals
National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has called for the abolition of public participation in government projects, citing delays in development and unnecessary obstacles. Speaking in Taita Taveta on Monday, December 2, the Suna East MP described the requirement as a hindrance to progress.
Public Participation: A “Waste of Time”
Junet expressed frustration over the current processes requiring extensive consultations with stakeholders like residents, civic organizations, and religious groups before implementing projects or passing bills.
“The government should eliminate public participation in the passage of bills. Tanzania is collaborating with Adani to develop its airport—the same investors we rejected. Are Tanzanians crazy?” he questioned.
Comparing Households to Governance
Junet humorously contrasted government approval procedures with household decisions, suggesting the former is unnecessarily complicated.
“This issue of seeking permission from everyone must stop. The government cannot ask for approval from courts and churches just to install electricity,” he remarked in Swahili, emphasizing the inefficiency of such processes.
Delays in Development Projects
Junet also pointed out that public participation often leads to stalled development projects, undermining the government’s ability to deliver its mandate.
“The government is elected to bring development to the country, but when it tries to fulfill its duties, it faces obstacles,” he argued, as reported by KBC.
Fast-Tracking Bills and Projects
Junet urged for a system that allows the government to move swiftly on development programs without unnecessary consultations, stressing the need for efficiency in delivering public services.
