Senator Orwoba Demands Alfred Mutua’s Sacking – Here’s Why
During a Senate session on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Orwoba made a direct appeal to President William Ruto, urging him to sack Mutua over the mismanagement of the controversial diaspora jobs program.
The senator accused the Labour Ministry of facilitating fraudsters who prey on desperate job seekers under the pretext of legitimate recruitment for overseas employment.
“I am calling on the President, my party leader, to fire the Cabinet Secretary of Labour because he is fully aware of what is happening. He knows why we are standing here outraged. This person is incompetent and is clearly not working in the interests of Kenyans,” Orwoba asserted.
Personal Involvement in Recruitment
Orwoba disclosed that she had personally participated in a recruitment drive in partnership with the National Employment Authority (NEA), believing it to be a legitimate government-led initiative.
“I am standing here because I have been affected by this issue of diaspora jobs. I took part in a recruitment drive in collaboration with the National Employment Authority because they invited me to do so,” she explained.
The senator criticized those suggesting that Kenyans should have been more cautious before engaging in such programs, equating it to discouraging citizens from participating in other state-run initiatives, such as universal healthcare.
Condemning Victim Blaming
Orwoba strongly opposed the notion that victims of the scam should have been more vigilant, questioning how fraudsters were able to operate within an official government structure.
“Since when does the Kenyan government allow conmen to set up in official offices and deceive young people seeking opportunities?” she questioned.
She emphasized the desperation among Kenyans looking for employment abroad, stressing that they should not be blamed for trusting what appeared to be government-backed programs.
“People are desperate for jobs. You cannot dismiss their participation by saying, ‘Why did you take part?’ We also have government programs like universal healthcare through SHIF and SHA. Would you tell Kenyans not to engage in them as well?” she posed.
Calls for Accountability
Orwoba maintained that the government has a duty to protect its citizens and ensure the legitimacy of its employment initiatives. She argued that Kenyans should not have to second-guess government-endorsed programs.
“The government exists to serve the people. If an official initiative on labour export is announced, you cannot expect Kenyans to avoid it out of fear that they might be scammed,” she stated.
The senator further condemned what she termed as victim-blaming, pointing out that some victims were deceived directly through the Ministry of Labour’s offices.
“That is victim-blaming. Some of those who were conned engaged directly with the Ministry of Labour. So, what message are we sending to Kenyans?” she charged.
Concluding her remarks, Orwoba reiterated her demand for Mutua’s dismissal, stating emphatically, “Let him go home. Let him go home.”
