Senate Drops Committee, Moves Mwangaza Impeachment to Full House Floor for Hearing
Senate Schedules Mwangaza’s Impeachment Hearing for Next Week in Plenary
In a bold move, the Senate has bypassed the usual committee process and opted to bring Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment case directly to the House floor. This decision, which overturns a proposal to form a smaller, 11-member committee, will allow all Senators to participate in the debate, marking a significant departure from past practice.
The hearing is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday next week, following a directive from Senate Speaker Amason Kingi. The Speaker emphasized the importance of transparency and full participation, insisting that the matter be handled in plenary. This shift has sparked a debate within the Senate, with some Senators supporting the move for greater openness, while others argue that a smaller committee would have been more efficient.
Speaker Kingi has ordered that both the Meru County Assembly and Governor Mwangaza be served with notice by Wednesday and that their responses be submitted by Saturday. All relevant documents will be distributed to Senators by Sunday, ensuring they are fully prepared for the hearings.
This decision has divided opinions within the Senate. Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dhullo praised the move for its transparency, while Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna expressed concerns about the plenary’s efficiency. Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina warned that limiting the investigation to a committee could have led to accusations of bias.
As the Senate gears up for next week’s hearing, all eyes will be on the outcome of this high-stakes impeachment process, which promises to be as contentious as it is consequential.
