See Why Kericho Governor Is Impeached
Kericho Governor Eric Mutai has been impeached by the County Assembly after 31 out of 47 members voted in favor of a motion to remove him from office.
The impeachment is based on accusations of gross violations of the constitution, abuse of office, and the misuse of public resources.
The motion was spearheaded by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, who leveled serious allegations against the governor.
Among them were claims that Governor Mutai led a mob to seize private land in Kericho town to use as an illegal dumpsite and coerced women into engaging in inappropriate sexual acts.
Governor Mutai was notably absent during the proceedings, choosing instead to send a legal team headed by Katwa Kigen to represent him.
Mutai had previously attempted to stop the impeachment through a court order, but the order was allegedly not served in time, allowing the County Assembly to proceed with the vote.
The County Assembly Speaker is now expected to forward the decision to the Senate, which will determine whether or not to uphold the impeachment
