School Bus Fire Kills Over 20 Students and Teachers on Field Trip
In a devastating accident, at least 23 people, mostly students, tragically lost their lives when a school bus caught fire on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday. The bus, carrying more than 40 students and teachers on a field trip, erupted in flames in what authorities are now calling one of the deadliest school transportation incidents in recent history.
The fire, which broke out suddenly, claimed 23 lives, with their bodies identified by the forensic team led by Commissioner Trairong Phiwpan. The investigation is ongoing as authorities attempt to uncover the cause of this heartbreaking event.
Sixteen students and three teachers, who managed to escape the inferno, are currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital, according to Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit. Haunting images from the scene showed thick plumes of grey smoke rising from the bus, parts of which were still engulfed in flames even as firefighters fought to extinguish the blaze.
Witnesses recounted terrifying moments as flames spread rapidly through the vehicle. “Teachers told us that the fire ignited very quickly,” acting police chief Kittirat Phanphet explained in a press conference. Initial reports suggest that a spark from a tire may have ignited a gas cylinder that powered the bus, leading to the tragic explosion.
The bus, a natural gas vehicle (NGV), is now the subject of an intensive investigation. Authorities are also probing the bus company to determine whether negligence played a role in this incident. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, offering her heartfelt condolences, stated, “As a mother, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families,” in a message shared on social media.
This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the importance of ensuring safety in school transportation, as families, friends, and the nation mourn the loss of so many young lives.
