Saboti MP Blasts Sakaja for Seeking Chapati Machine from Ruto “Focus on Bigger Issues”
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has taken a swipe at Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja for requesting a chapati-making machine from President William Ruto during his development tour of the capital.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Tuesday, March 11, Amisi criticized Sakaja, saying he should have focused on more significant infrastructural projects instead of a chapati machine.
“A governor of the biggest regional capital city, whose GDP rivals that of about 15 African countries, boasts of chapatis as his main economic activity and legacy project,” Amisi remarked.
He added that Sakaja should have prioritized calls for underground speed train systems, overpass roads, and water points across residential areas.
“He even requests the head of state to forget the underground speed train system, overpass roads around the city, and water points across residences, but instead to buy him a monstrous chapati-making machine to help make 1,000,000 chapatis per minute; and the voters and citizens still line up the streets to cheer him for such a revolutionary idea since Vasco da Gama traversed the Cape of Good Hope,” Amisi stated.
Sakaja made the request while addressing students at St Teresa Girls High School, where he highlighted the need to enhance the Dishi na County program, which currently provides meals to thousands of Nairobi learners.
“Do you like Dishi Na County? How is the food, and what do you want us to add? Chapati? Let me talk to the president so he can get us a chapati-making machine,” Sakaja told the students.
President Ruto pledged to fulfill the governor’s request, instructing Sakaja to source a suitable machine.
“I have heard about it, and I will buy it. Governor, find the machine that can produce chapatis in large numbers, and we will incorporate it into Dishi na County,” Ruto said.
Launched on June 19, 2023, Dishi na County aims to tackle food insecurity in schools by providing balanced meals daily through centralized kitchens in each of Nairobi’s 17 sub-counties. Over 316,000 students from more than 230 schools are currently benefiting from the program, which has served over 30 million meals.
