Ruto to Join African Leaders at High-Stakes China-Africa Summit in Beijing
President William Ruto is set to attend the ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, China, marking a significant return to the global stage after a period of domestic focus. The summit, scheduled from September 4 to September 6, will bring together African leaders and top Chinese officials to strengthen the strategic partnership between China and Africa.
Speaking in Bungoma on Sunday, President Ruto hinted at his upcoming trip, stating, “Because I will be travelling out of the country later today, I thought of the stadium work I left here. I thought of passing by to see if I will look for money to complete the stadium and other development projects here.” His remarks underscored his commitment to Kenya’s development even as he engages in international diplomacy.
The FOCAC summit, established in 2000, serves as a key platform for dialogue between China and African nations, with discussions expected to cover a range of topics, including green energy, internet connectivity, and potential political alliances. The forum excludes the Kingdom of Eswatini, which does not have diplomatic ties with China.
President Ruto’s participation in the summit marks his first international engagement outside Africa since a two-month diplomatic hiatus prompted by political unrest in Kenya. This comes after youth-led protests against the Finance Bill 2024 forced the President to overhaul his Cabinet and focus on stabilizing the country.
Alongside President Ruto, other prominent African leaders such as South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo, and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed will be in attendance, highlighting the significance of this year’s FOCAC summit in fostering stronger China-Africa relations.
