Ruto Taps Bishop Wanjiru, Omanga for Urban Renewal
In a strategic move to reclaim Nairobi’s rivers, President William Ruto has appointed Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, former Starehe Member of Parliament, as Chairperson of the newly formed Nairobi Rivers Commission.
The announcement, made through a gazette notice on October 25, also named Millicent Omanga, former Nominated Senator, as a commission member. Both leaders, alongside nine other distinguished appointees, will be tasked with revitalizing the capital’s river systems and promoting sustainable urban development.
The commission, which includes members such as Mumo Musuva, Grace Senewa Mesopirr, and John Kioli, aims to rejuvenate the Nairobi River and other water bodies within the city. President Ruto emphasized the need for an integrated approach, combining environmental protection with urban beautification to benefit Nairobi’s residents.
In his directive, President Ruto highlighted that previous efforts fell short in restoring Nairobi’s rivers to sustain aquatic life and improve urban ecology. The commission’s primary goal will be to examine prior initiatives, assess challenges, and create actionable, sustainable solutions for the future of Nairobi’s river basin.
Additionally, the commission will coordinate various governmental and private stakeholders, providing a unified approach to reclaiming Nairobi’s rivers and enhancing the city’s livability.
With a three-year mandate, the appointees are tasked with leveraging past lessons to foster a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Nairobi. The Nairobi Rivers Commission will operate under the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, which will assist in the management and coordination of the commission’s daily affairs.
