Ruto Calls Livestock Vaccination Critics ‘Mad and Possessed by Evil Spirits
President William Ruto has launched a blistering attack on critics of the upcoming national livestock vaccination programme, branding them as “stupid, unreasonable, mad, or possessed by evil spirits.”
Speaking at the 4th Pastoralist Leadership Summit in Wajir County, the President defended the government’s January rollout of a programme targeting 22 million cattle to curb Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR).
He expressed disbelief at the resistance, urging critics to remain silent if they lacked expertise on the subject.
“There is an evil spirit in Kenyans; they oppose everything by spreading lies,” Ruto said, dismissing detractors as irrational.
The programme has faced opposition from leaders such as Wiper Party’s Kalonzo Musyoka, who claims it aligns with foreign interests, potentially endangering local cattle breeds. “We reject these experiments and will resist them to the very end,” Kalonzo declared, urging Kenyans to join in opposing the initiative.
Ruto’s remarks are part of a growing trend in his rhetoric. Last week, he criticized allegations of corruption in the National Equipment Service Programme (NESP), describing those making the claims as “fools.” Similarly, he recently attributed opposition to several government initiatives, including housing and health reforms, to “evil spirits of resistance.”
While some applaud his direct approach, critics argue that the President’s language is increasingly unbecoming of his office, risking polarization in addressing national issues.
