Ruto Appoints Susan Nakhumicha to Key Government Role
President William Ruto has appointed former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha to a key diplomatic post. She will now serve as the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations Habitat in Nairobi. This appointment arrives nine months after she was removed from her cabinet position.
State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed announced the nomination, alongside other diplomatic appointments. James Buyekane Muhati and Abdi Dubat Fidhow were selected as Consul-Generals in Guangzhou, China, and Arusha, Tanzania, respectively. Additionally, Peter Tum was nominated as Kenyan Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Alfred K’Ombundo as Deputy Head of Mission in Belgium.
“Per Article 132 (2) (e) of the Constitution, His Excellency the President has nominated the following persons to serve as Ambassadors, Consuls-General, and Deputy Heads of Mission in Kenya’s foreign missions abroad,” Mohamed stated.
These nominations have been submitted to the National Assembly for approval, as required by the Kenyan Constitution.
Nakhumicha’s new role follows her public plea for a government position, where she expressed financial struggles. Last October, she spoke about the challenges of adjusting to life after being a cabinet secretary. She noted the persistent public association of her unique name with her former position.
“Bishop pray for me, you know it is not easy to have been a minister then all of a sudden you are just Nakumicha, and you know my name is unique,” Nakhumicha lamented, “When you say Nakhumicha, that name is distinct, and associate it with the Health CS position. Please continue praying for me, God has blessed me and I still expect more blessings.”
Her dismissal from the cabinet occurred in July, following nationwide anti-government protests.
President Ruto cited the need for a government reset as the reason for the cabinet reshuffle, emphasizing that the decisions were made after careful consideration. This strategic appointment to the UN Habitat mission signals a new chapter for Nakhumicha within the Kenyan government.
