Ruto Accuses Catholic Church of Rejecting Generosity as He Donates KSh 20M to Jesus Winner Ministry
President William Ruto has once again criticized the leadership of the Catholic Church for rejecting his KSh 5 million donation, questioning the basis of their decision.
Speaking at Jesus Winner Ministry in Roysambu on Sunday, March 2, Ruto expressed his confusion over why his contribution was turned down.
“I am blamed many times because of giving, but when we donate in church, we are doing so for God and not the congregation. I have tried reading the Bible but have not seen any verse that says if you donate to God, then the bishop will return the donation to you,” Ruto stated.
Despite the controversy, the president proceeded to donate KSh 20 million to the church and further pledged KSh 100 million for its construction. He emphasized his commitment to supporting religious institutions, declaring that his generosity would counter his critics.
“We will build this church so that we can shame the enemies of the nation of Kenya,” he affirmed.
Ruto was accompanied by several leaders, including Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Catholic Church Rejects Political Donations
The president has previously faced criticism for his substantial financial contributions to churches. One of the most notable rejections came from Nairobi Archdiocese Bishop Philip Anyolo, who turned down Ruto’s KSh 5.8 million donation.
The donation had included KSh 600,000 for the church choir, KSh 2 million for constructing the Father’s House, a promise of KSh 3 million more, and a parish bus. However, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) issued a strong statement questioning the sources of politicians’ donations and directed all Catholic churches to reject cash gifts from politicians.
Despite this, while some churches have refused donations from political figures, others continue to accept them.
