Russian Crew Killed as Cargo Plane Shot Down in War-Torn Sudan
Russia’s embassy in Sudan is investigating reports that a Russian-crewed cargo plane was shot down in Darfur, a region engulfed in civil war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The plane, a Russian-made Ilyushin Il-76, was en route to deliver critical supplies, including equipment and medicine, to the army-controlled city of el-Fasher when it crashed under mysterious circumstances.
While the RSF claims to have downed the plane, accusing it of being part of Egyptian military efforts to bomb civilians, conflicting reports have surfaced.
Some sources suggest a technical fault, while others speculate the aircraft was mistakenly targeted due to its possible affiliation with an airline previously linked to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE denies any involvement, despite UN reports citing credible evidence of its support for the RSF.
Footage from the crash site shows RSF soldiers examining what appear to be Russian passports and identification cards found near the wreckage. Reports indicate all crew members, including two Russians and three Sudanese nationals, perished in the crash.
The RSF claims to have retrieved the plane’s black box and seized important documents related to its mission.
The ongoing civil war, which erupted in April 2023, has plunged Sudan into one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with over 150,000 lives lost and more than 10 million displaced.
Despite diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire, fighting has intensified in key regions, including Khartoum and Darfur, leaving the future of Sudan hanging in the balance.
