Russia Strikes Back as Ukraine Forces Push 30 Km Inside Its Territory
In a significant escalation of the conflict, Russia’s military has acknowledged that Ukrainian forces have penetrated deep into its territory, reporting that it struck Ukrainian troops and equipment approximately 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the border. The surprising cross-border incursion, launched by Kyiv last Tuesday, has taken Russia off guard, prompting a swift and substantial military response.
Moscow has since deployed additional reserves, including tanks, drones, artillery, and aviation, in an effort to repel the advancing Ukrainian units. On Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have thwarted several attempts by Ukrainian mobile groups, supported by armored vehicles, to advance further into Russian territory.
However, the ministry’s statement also revealed the extent of the Ukrainian incursion, admitting that Russian forces had to target enemy units near the villages of Tolpino and Obshchy Kolodez, located 25 km and 30 km from the Russia-Ukraine border, respectively. This development underscores the depth of the Ukrainian advance, which has reached areas previously considered secure by Russian forces.
A senior Ukrainian official confirmed that “thousands” of troops had been committed to the operation, signaling Kyiv’s determination to push the boundaries of the ongoing conflict.
Russia continues to employ aviation, drones, and artillery in an attempt to contain the Ukrainian offensive. Additionally, Moscow reported thwarting another Ukrainian attempt to breach the border in the Kursk region, a district further south where significant fighting has also erupted.
As the conflict intensifies, both sides remain locked in a dangerous and unpredictable battle, with the potential for further escalations on the horizon.
