Remember An Officer Who Lost His Hand Through A Grenade In A Protest
On June 18, 2024, a day etched in his memory, Chief Inspector David Maina of the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) experienced a life-altering accident involving a stun grenade. What began as routine crowd control turned into a tragedy when the grenade unexpectedly detonated in his hands.
In an interview with TV 47, Maina recounted the moment that changed everything. “I really do not understand what happened because this was something I have used and gone through training,” he shared. His attempts to remove the grenade’s safety pin went awry, leading to the explosion that left him with severe injuries and the loss of both limbs.
Maina, now undergoing counseling and rehabilitation, is determined to remain optimistic. He expressed confidence that, after acquiring prosthetic hands, he will return to service. “I am still on the recovery process; the wounds are healing,” he said with hope.
Adjusting to life without hands has been challenging, but Maina is thankful for the unwavering support of his family and medical team. Despite facing public criticism suggesting he intended to harm protesters, Maina dismissed such claims as misguided. “We ignore some of these criticisms because some of them are from people who are ignorant,” he stated firmly.
He also clarified that the stun grenade was intended to disorient and disperse crowds without causing harm. Flash bangs, or stun grenades, are designed to produce light and sound to disorient, not injure. Maina remains focused on his recovery journey, determined to regain his independence and return to the service he loves.
