Raila’s Mission in China: What It Means for Kenya and Africa
In a significant development for Kenya’s diplomatic engagements, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary (PS) Korir Sing’oei has shed light on the strategic reasons behind Raila Odinga’s participation in the China-Africa Summit alongside President William Ruto. According to PS Sing’oei, Odinga’s role during the visit is crucial for fostering future African Union-China trade partnerships.
“Raila will primarily seek to understand the areas of potential partnership and establish connections with key players involved in AU-China relations. Partnership is an integral part of the AUC chairman’s job,” explained Sing’oei.
In addition to his diplomatic mission, Odinga will join President Ruto at a state banquet hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking a significant moment in African diplomacy. The banquet, scheduled for Wednesday evening, will bring together over 30 African Heads of State and more than 40 Foreign Affairs Ministers, underscoring the importance of the summit.
Odinga is also set to attend the opening ceremony of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit, where he and President Ruto are expected to meet with select African leaders. This event, taking place on the morning of September 5th, is pivotal in shaping future collaborations between Africa and China.
President Ruto, who arrived in China earlier this week, has already secured significant gains for Kenya, including market access for the country’s agricultural products in China. Additionally, discussions are underway to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and advance the Rironi-Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba dual carriageway projects.
The cooperation between Ruto and Odinga, which began on August 27, 2024, when Kenya endorsed Odinga for the AUC chairperson position, signifies a remarkable political alliance. President Ruto has expressed confidence in Odinga’s capabilities to lead the African Union Commission, citing his extensive leadership experience.
As Odinga prepares for the ultimate test in 2025—when the Heads of State and Government convene in Addis Ababa to elect the next AUC Chair—the diplomatic groundwork laid in China could prove vital. A two-thirds majority of the 55 member states will be required for victory, a formidable challenge that Odinga seems well-prepared to face.
