Raila’s Aggressive Campaign Targets Southern Africa Bloc
Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has embarked on a strategic campaign, visiting at least 10 southern African nations in a bid to secure support for his African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship candidature.
Raila kicked off his diplomatic tour earlier this week in Mauritius, where he secured the backing of Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. “Thank you, Hon Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for your unequivocal support for my candidature,” Raila shared via his X account following their meeting.
Backed by a team led by former Kenyan ambassador to the US, Elkanah Odembo, Raila’s campaign involves a rigorous schedule throughout January. The team has prioritized engagements with recently elected leaders in Mozambique, Namibia, and Botswana, where Raila plans to share his vision for the continent and align on priorities.
“These visits are crucial for Candidate Raila to congratulate the new leaders, understand their expectations of the AUC, and present his agenda,” Odembo revealed.
In addition to Mozambique, Namibia, and Botswana, Raila’s itinerary includes seven other nations within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a bloc comprising 16 member states.
Raila is contesting against Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Mauritius’ Anil Kumarsingh Gayan, and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato to succeed Moussa Faki Mahamat as the AUC chairperson. The elections are slated for February 2025 during the African Union Summit.
Kenya remains determined to rally widespread support amid stiff competition, particularly from Djibouti’s candidate.
