Raila Breaks Silence on Bodyguard George Oduor’s Death
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has broken his silence after the death of his longtime aide and bodyguard, George Oduor, who passed away on April 2, 2025.
In a heartfelt statement, Raila described Oduor as a dedicated and professional figure who had been part of both his and his father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s family since the late 1980s. Raila noted that Oduor’s calm demeanor and professionalism had made him an invaluable aide during difficult and tumultuous times.
“George has been a part of Jaramogi’s and my family since the late 80s. We have stood, fallen, and risen together. He has been a vigilant, calm, confident, and extremely professional aide dedicated to duty and a dependable rock on my side all these years through tumultuous periods,” Raila wrote, emphasizing Oduor’s role in their shared history.
Raila further extended condolences on behalf of the Odinga and Jaramogi families to Oduor’s wife, Carol George, and the entire family, colleagues, and friends. “I will miss George, and I am sorry to the myriad friends who miss him already. To his wife, Carol George, entire family, colleagues, and friends, I offer Mama Ida’s and the entire Jaramogi family’s sincere condolences at this devastating loss,” Raila concluded.
Oduor’s death was confirmed earlier that day, following his passing at Nairobi West Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment. The tragic news led to an outpouring of tributes from political figures and friends alike, all recalling his loyalty and service.
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai expressed his grief on X, writing, “George Oduor, rest in peace, my brother. I will miss your wise counsel and guidance. You were more than an aide to Baba. You offered to us brotherly advice and sought to mentor us.”
ODM Communications Director Philip Etale also shared his sorrow, calling Oduor a steadfast friend and confidant. “This is one man who stood by me at all costs. I have lost a friend. Rest easy George,” Etale said, reflecting the deep bond they shared.
Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris praised Oduor’s dedication and loyalty, noting that he had served as a bodyguard to both Raila Odinga and his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, with unwavering commitment. “George was possibly the longest-serving bodyguard. His legacy of loyalty and dedication will not be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace,” Passaris stated.
Siaya Governor James Orengo also shared heartfelt memories of Oduor, describing him as a humble and sober man who had stood by Raila through thick and thin. “George tolerated all the fuss that came with being around politics, always sober and never lost his mind, he was the true gentleman of VIP protection. Oduor was exactly who we needed at the most difficult and trying moments. We will dearly miss him. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Orengo mourned.
George Oduor’s passing marks the end of an era for those who worked closely with him, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, professionalism, and commitment to duty.
