Rachel Ruto Leads Kenya’s Women’s Empowerment Agenda in Beijing as President Ruto Seeks Infrastructure Deals
Kenya’s First Lady, Mama Rachel Ruto, has touched down in Beijing to accompany President William Ruto at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) 2024. While the President will focus on high-stakes infrastructure and trade deals, Mama Rachel’s mission is equally pivotal, centering on women’s economic empowerment and international partnerships.
During her stay, Mama Rachel will engage with global development partners and investors to advance the economic status of Kenyan women. Her agenda includes forming strategic alliances to enhance children’s welfare and positioning Kenya as a premier tourist destination.
One of the highlights of her visit will be attending a session hosted by China’s First Lady, H.E. Prof. Peng Liyuan, where they will discuss accelerating women’s empowerment through education. This collaboration aligns with the development goals of both Kenya and China.
Moreover, Mama Rachel is keen on connecting with Kenyan women professionals in the diaspora to attract investment and bolster the inflow of diaspora remittances, further strengthening Kenya’s economy.
Meanwhile, President Ruto is expected to secure multi-million-dollar agreements focusing on infrastructure, healthcare, and technology. The President will also co-chair a session on the Belt and Road Initiative, underlining Kenya’s strategic role in China-Africa relations. Key projects on the table include the expansion of the SGR, rural road construction, and the Bosto Dam Water Supply Project.
This visit is poised to not only deepen Kenya-China relations but also chart new avenues for cooperation, including the establishment of a pharmaceutical park and negotiations for a Preferential Trade Agreement and Investment Protection Agreement.
