Quickmart Denies Claims of Hidden Bodies at Nairobi CBD Outlet

Quickmart Supermarket has firmly denied online allegations that bodies were hidden inside its OTC branch in Nairobi during the June 25 demonstrations.

In a statement released Thursday, the retail chain acknowledged that its outlets in OTC and Ruiru were broken into during the nationwide protests but emphasized that no injuries or fatalities occurred at either location.

The clarification follows the circulation of images showing heavy police presence at the OTC outlet, sparking rumors on social media that officers were retrieving dead bodies from the premises.

“Quickmart notes that two of our branches in OTC and Ruiru were affected during yesterday’s demonstrations,” read part of the company’s statement. “Contrary to misleading information circulating on digital platforms, we wish to assure the public that no staff, customers, or any other individuals were injured or deceased at the two outlets.”

Quickmart reiterated its commitment to the safety of its employees, customers, and the public, adding that recovery measures were underway to resume operations. Customers were advised to use the nearest branches in the meantime.

This statement came hours after activist Hanifa Adan shared messages she received from distressed protesters outside the OTC branch, questioning possible foul play. “What’s going on at Quickmart? Goodness,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter), alongside screenshots of concerned messages.

Some of the messages claimed police officers were preventing access to the branch and allegedly removing bodies, with one individual alleging up to 30 bodies were retrieved.

These claims emerged as Amnesty International Kenya confirmed at least 16 people had been killed across the country during the June 25 protests, which marked one year since the 2024 anti-finance bill demonstrations.
