President Ruto Pledges to End Femicide Epidemic Following Alarming Discovery in Nairobi
President William Ruto has pledged to tackle the escalating femicide crisis in Kenya, following a recent chilling incident where human bones were discovered at Lang’ata Cemetery. Addressing the public during the 73rd Anniversary of the African Divine Church in Nairobi, Ruto outlined his government’s commitment to bolster resources for the police and to create a comprehensive strategy aimed at curbing violence against women.
“We face a dual challenge—both criminal and moral—that we must address together,” Ruto asserted. “As government, I promise to go beyond our usual means to ensure our police are well-equipped to tackle this crisis effectively.”
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, echoing the pleas of many Kenyans, had urged the President to take swift action on the issue that, over the last three months, has led to the tragic deaths of 97 women. Sakaja implored, “Your Excellency, our women are crying for safety. We need to address the security and resources for police and surveillance to protect them.”
Ruto acknowledged that the crisis has roots in both criminal behavior and a breakdown in societal morals. “This violence impacts our girls, our families—it’s a societal wound. We will implement a comprehensive approach to address not only the crime but also the moral decay fueling it,” he pledged.
Calling on parents and communities, Ruto stressed the importance of collective action. “We all have a role to play—not just government, but as parents and citizens. We cannot point fingers without asking ourselves, ‘What am I doing to stop this menace?’” he said, urging Kenyans to work alongside authorities to foster a safer society.
Ruto also issued a direct appeal to those responsible for the violence, questioning their actions: “How have we reached a point where the women we’re meant to cherish are instead losing their lives at the hands of men?”
Further, President Ruto issued a stern directive to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to intensify investigations and ensure perpetrators are held accountable. “We have recently witnessed horrendous acts against our women. Let this be clear—the DCI and all investigative bodies in Kenya must rise up and confront these criminals,” Ruto commanded.
The President’s remarks have struck a chord as civil groups and citizens alike rally for stronger measures to stem the tide of violence against women.
