President Ruto: Parents Must Lead in Instilling Good Morals in Children
President William Ruto has called on parents to take the lead in nurturing moral values and guiding their children to develop good character. Speaking during the commissioning of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campus in Kerio Valley on Thursday, Ruto emphasized a unified approach to address societal challenges and what he termed “moral decay.”
“We must have a whole of society approach, making sure that the government and religious organizations contribute their part,” said President Ruto. “Parents must be at the center, ensuring our children are not only educated but also mentored into individuals of good character. We must protect them from influences that could derail their future and harm our nation.”
Ruto’s remarks come amid increasing youth activism against the Kenya Kwanza administration, with concerns over the moral and social trajectory of the younger generation.
His sentiments were echoed by Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, who previously highlighted the importance of mentorship in shaping the youth.
“Some of our young people are very gifted, talented, and innovative, but they resist mentorship because they believe they know it all. That is a dangerous approach. No matter how talented you are, mentorship is non-negotiable—it’s a universal principle acknowledged by all religions, philosophies, and cultures,” said Kindiki.
A Call for Parental Responsibility
President Ruto reiterated his stance on parental responsibility during a wedding ceremony in Mombasa last December, where he attributed rising crime rates and social issues like drug trafficking and femicide to a lack of moral grounding.
“The criminals we deal with are our children from our homes. It is our responsibility to guide them to ensure they do not become offenders,” he said.
Ruto dismissed blame games, urging parents to actively shape their children’s values and work collaboratively with the government to combat societal ills.
The President reassured Kenyans that the government remains committed to providing essential services like education and healthcare while taking firm action to address criminal activities.
“We will intervene firmly to deal with criminals—those who kill, engage in drug trafficking, femicide, and other unlawful acts,” he asserted.
