President Ruto Congratulates Trump, Sets Stage for New US-Kenya Ties
President William Ruto has joined a growing list of global leaders in congratulating Donald Trump on his projected victory in the United States presidential election. Trump’s win was officially confirmed on Wednesday after surpassing 270 electoral college votes, securing him a return to the White House.
In a statement shared on his official page, Ruto described Trump as a leader with “visionary, bold, and innovative leadership,” expressing optimism about future cooperation between Kenya and the United States. “On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Kenya and on my own behalf, I convey to Your Excellency, my warmest congratulations on your election as the 47th President of the United States of America,” he wrote.
Subtly hinting at early diplomatic ties with the incoming Republican administration, Ruto indicated Kenya’s readiness to work closely with the U.S. on key global and bilateral issues. He added, “As you embark on this phase of your journey of leadership, Kenya stands ready to further enhance our cooperation on matters of mutual interest including trade, investment, technology & innovation, peace and security, and sustainable development.”
Emphasizing the importance of this renewed relationship, Ruto expressed enthusiasm for working together to address shared challenges, promote peace, and foster economic growth for the benefit of both nations. “We look forward to deepening our collaboration under your leadership as we work together to address global challenges, promote peace and security, and foster inclusive economic growth for the benefit of our peoples,” he said.
Trump’s victory became clear after securing Wisconsin, pushing him past the 270-vote mark. Although the final count remains pending, Trump appears poised to clinch the popular vote, a feat no Republican has achieved since George W. Bush in 2004.
In congratulating Trump, Ruto joins influential leaders such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who have also reached out to strengthen diplomatic ties with the incoming U.S. administration. Observers anticipate Trump’s administration will bring new opportunities for bilateral initiatives across Africa, potentially bolstering economic ties and investment in Kenya.
While Ruto has previously built a strong diplomatic relationship with outgoing President Joe Biden, including a recent state visit to Washington D.C., the shift in leadership may offer fresh opportunities for collaboration. Biden’s team reaffirmed the longstanding U.S.-Kenya partnership during Ruto’s visit, emphasizing shared values and mutual goals. However, as Trump reclaims office, questions arise about how his administration will impact Kenyan nationals living in the U.S., particularly given his strict stance on immigration policies.
