Police Officer and Gang Arrested in Connection with Deadly Robberies in Meru
In a major breakthrough, detectives in Meru County have arrested three individuals, including a police officer, in connection with a string of violent robberies that have terrorized residents of Imenti North and Buuri West sub-counties.
The suspects, identified as Patrick Muriera M’mbijiwe (35), Kenneth Muthethia Kiriinya, alias Kiroria, and Corporal Dominic Munene Peter, a police officer stationed in Marsabit County, were apprehended following an extensive investigation by a multi-agency team.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed that the police officer was working alongside the other suspects, facilitating their criminal activities. The breakthrough came after the two civilian suspects were interrogated, eventually leading detectives to a hidden stash of weapons.
Among the recovered items was an M16 SAR rifle, along with two magazines and 67 rounds of ammunition, buried in Kianjuri village.
The DCI reported that the suspects had carried out multiple violent crimes in the region, including livestock theft, armed home invasions, and murder. In one tragic incident, a woman lost her life after being shot during a robbery in Rugusu village on September 15th, 2024.
In a separate attack, the suspects attempted to set fire to a house, shooting both the homeowner and his wife when the arson attempt failed.
The police operation, led by the Criminal Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) along with other specialized units, has provided much-needed relief to the residents of Meru, who had been living in fear due to the violent sprees of the gang.
